*No candidate won a majority of electoral votes, so the House of Representatives chose the president; the name shown led the electoral vote. See that year's page for the official record.

Midterm congressional elections

Official House and Senate returns for every midterm since 1922, from the Clerk of the House, plus the FEC's certified reports from 1982 onward. From 1998, every candidate's result is browsable by state, for midterm and presidential years alike.

What is official, and what is covered

Every figure here comes from a federal record, and every source file is preserved byte-for-byte in the bulk data mirror:

  • Electoral College, 1789–2024— the National Archives' results for every presidential election, plus the states' Certificates of Ascertainment and Vote for 2012–2024.
  • Statistics of the Presidential and Congressional Election, 1920–2024— the House Clerk's official returns for every House, Senate, and presidential race, by state and district. The 1998–2024 editions are transcribed here race by race and checked against each report's own totals and the FEC's figures; the 1920–1996 editions survive only as page scans and are preserved as published.
  • Federal Elections, 1982–2024— the FEC's certified results compiled from state election officials, including primaries.

There is no official federal compilation of congressional returns before 1920, or of state and local races at any time; those records are kept by each state. Popular vote before 1920 was not compiled by the federal government either, so presidential pages for those years show the Electoral College record only.
